Sucking up water, food, gasoline, energy & creating more pollution that a child in a Third World country could hope to do in 10 lifetimes.

So what happened to Zero Population Growth? It WAS an American idea that was briefly discussed in the 70s & 80s but has quietly changed their names & SHUT UP.

Why? Because Americans believe that their way of life is the ONLY correct way to live & all other ways are just WRONG. So we keep on polluting & exporting our terror to the rest of the WORLD.

Pledge to NOT have children AMERICANs & do the PLANET a favor.

Paula - you are right (I'm sorry)! We need to stop touting a 'we're f***'ed' attitude (as I have often done). Why? Because - at the risk of sounding New Agey - the power of what we feel and say should never be underestimated. I'm actually getting pretty peeved with people I hear going on about how war with Iran or a World War III is inevitable for example. Isn't it obvious that the true Warmongers would love to see a populace that is accustomed to the idea of a huge war!? If we live in fear then we are easier to control and to destroy - it's that simple.

What's needed is to behave and feel and exist as though this world must be sustainable and as though this is all there is. It's fine to believe in other dimensions, or to be a misanthropist, or to want an 'end' - but how many people can honestly say they are true nihilists? No new humans, but yes to sustainabilty, to fighting opression, to micro and macro resistance and to fun, creativity and imagination!

I'm new, thanks for starting this tribe. I see that there is a view that the planet is already doomed and that we don't agree with just blithely sending food to starving countries without addressing other issues as well, but I've been thinking. What exactly should we do to put ourselves in the 'solution' camp rather than the armchair complainer camp. To be honest, the most that I have done to curb the population is to choose not to have a litter myself. I'm sure there's more to be done. Maybe donate to the Planned Parenthood Population Fund? What else? What do you do?

What are your thoughts on this? Why don't our governments get it?

The U.S. and other "First World" countries send millions of tons of food to starving nations, as a gesture of humanitarian aid. The problem is with any species is that more food & resources = increased reproduction and population. Supplemental food isn't a solution at all, in my eyes.

Sure, people starving is a bummer, and if our population weren't so HUGE we may not be starving as much.

In my community the farmers are selling out for cash and letting the developers plow over the orchards for homes. We're eliminating food, and bringing in more people at the same time. I guess the assumption is that somewhere else, people are racing in to farming to help feed us.

Yuck.

Maybe God was really talking about math when he (sic) said "Go forth and multiply". It wouldn't surprise me if we got it wrong - again.
